Cocos Expedition Data Analysis

During the Cocos Expedition our team analyzed 14 years of data and generated 8 time-based graphical charts to share with our community. In order to produce these reports, our team did the following:

  • Added 2005 data to the existing database.
  • Normalized the 2005 data (e.g. convert Celsius, Meters, etc.)
  • Collected dive data to contribute to the existing data.
  • Analyzed the data various ways and selected 8 reports to show on the site.
  • Converted the charts to HTML for web presentation.

Marine Population Charts for Cocos Island

All charts utilize data from 1992 to 2005.

Cocos Annual Marine Life Populations
This chart illustrates the average Hammerhead, Whitetip & Marble Ray populations for Cocos Island per dive. There is a table which shows average populations for each year.

Cocos Annual Populations for Other Rays and Turtles
Same as the above, but the chart illustrates Eagle Ray, Manta Ray, Mobula (Devil Ray) & Turtle populations.

Cocos Annual Populations for Jacks
Same as the above, but the chart illustrates Jack populations.

Cocos Marine Life Populations by Time of Year
This chart illustrates average Hammerhead, Whitetip & Marble Ray populations for the twelve months of the year. The data shows how marine populations have, on average, varied by the time of year.

Cocos Temperature and Visibility
This chart illustrates the historical average in sea temperature and water visibility for each year. This chart in particular shows the 1997/1998 “El Nino” time period.

Cocos Annual Hammerhead Population versus Water Temperature
This chart compares, by year, the average number of hammerhead sharks seen per dive with the water temperature.

Cocos Quarterly Hammerhead Population versus Water Temperature
Same as above, but the average is analyzed for each quarter and the data is scaled on the same axis to make comparing it easier.

Cocos Detailed Hammerhead Population versus Water Temperature
Same as above, but the data is shown for each dive.
