Imaging Foundation's Galapagos Expedition - Daily Log - April 2006
Solo Expedition Member Finds Adventure, Education and Common Purpose

By Richard Eicher

Prelude - Day 1

Deciding to join the Imaging Foundation's (IF) Galapagos Expedition was at first difficult because I was uncertain about the agenda, how (or if) I could fit in, and if I could really make a difference to the team effort. I had never been on an expedition before, my diving skills were intermediate at best and I had never taken any "serious" underwater photos. What value could I really offer?

Since I knew little about the IF and the expedition member's duties except that which was explained on the IF web site, I decided to email the IF directly. Not only did they email back to me promptly, but they called on the phone as well and answered my most critical concern - yes, I could make a real difference on the expedition. There were many ways to participate and they would find the right one for me.

I decided to go, but I still wondered if I would truly fit in among such elite divers and environmentalists. Only time would tell ....

Well, at the end of the trip, did I fit in? Absolutely.

The IF founders and the other expedition members were not only extraordinarily nice but they were also eager to help. I learned something from everyone on the trip and was able to contribute to the IF and, through them, the environment.

The following is a Daily Log of events.   If you are considering joining an expedition perhaps this will help give you an idea of what to expect. Based on my experience, you'll find the time, money and effort well spent.
