CERTIFICATION ON BOARD - NEW
The
Imaging Foundation invites ten students
to join their team for one to three weeks. The Imaging
Foundation will host members of the 2008 SCUBA Scholars
team in Kona, Hawaii from
June 7th - 28th,
2008. Expedition objectives will be custom designed for each
student depending upon their background and whether they
are participating in the full or partial program
The general
goals are:
to develop diving skills, observe and learn more about
marine
ecosystems,
learn "story-telling"
and production skills required for documentary filmmaking
and to learn from local experts about the terrestrial
and underwater Hawaiian ecosystems.
The scholars'
program was designed not only to teach, but to empower
participants and foster leadership skills. As
the expedition progresses, students assume responsibility
for scheduling, brainstorming, and running daily operations
that are essential to the success of the expedition.

program would provide
a perfect opportunity
for Stuart students to develop
an appreciation
for the underwater environment while
gaining an edge on college

History
The Imaging Foundation
was founded and is directed
by Stuart Country Day School
alumnae, Georgienne Bradley '77.
The mission of the organization
includes using professional
photography and production
techniques to promote interest
in marine and other natural
environments.
Click
here for more about the history of the Imaging Foundation.
Georgienne
and other Foundation leaders are making this classroom
opportunity available to students
who wish to participate in an expedition experience. Volunteers
teach a variety of programs and give young women the opportunity
to dive, learn about the oceans, the art of documentary
production and to experience
the responsibility of team
leadership in a real-world
environment. Our first
classroom experience was
in 2007 in the Cayman Islands.

Destination: Kona, Hawaii Kona
is located on "The Big Island" of
Hawaii. Away from the dense tourism
hub of Honolulu, its environment includes volcano,
rainforest, natural areas. The
Big Island's volcanic underwater
topography is
a diver's wonderland. Lava tubes,
bommies, arches and huge craters
like “Au Au Crater,” create
a spectacular backdrop for Hawaii’s
many indigenous species of butterfly
fish. Photographers will delight
in the many patient subjects; including
Spanish Dancers, turtles, mantas
and frogfish. Program
Overview
Students
will look over the shoulder of our
camera people
as they document Hawaii. Tape review
and animal identification will be
a daily team duty. We will be using
the Sony F900 high definition camera,
the best tool in the industry. While
underwater, the camera will be encased
in an Amphibico Pro-Housing. Students
can partake in a full or partial
expedition
FULL
EXPEDITION.
The
first week - Onboard the Aggressor (our liveaboard dive vessel). Our attention will be focused on testing diving skills, developing buoyancy, learning marine emergency procedures and nautical navigational instruction. Students will also be given safety and marine biology orientation. Students will dive several times each day and receive presentations and seminars about the flora and fauna of the Hawaiian Archipelago and around the world. Topics will include creative solutions to environmental problems, marine relationships, mutualism, symbiosis and parasitism. The
second week will be spent topside.
Hawaii attracts many of the world's
top marine biologists and we will
tap into that resource. We will also
visit the Mauna Kea astrological
observation site. During the second
week, we will begin teaching interested
students about nature photography
techniques and engage in brainstorming
creative ways to use our imagery
to teach others about SCUBA Diving
and the marine areas we are visiting.
June 15 - 20: Kona land lessons
will include a tour of the volcano
from
an airplane to study the geology
of the Hawaiian Islands. One-on-one
experience assisting with the high
definition camera.
Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii
Authority (NELHA). Using deep-sea
thermal vents as an alternative
energy source, the West Hawaii
Explorations
Academy focuses on deep sea organisms
that get pumped up in the intake
pipes at NELHA. An
access tour and lecture at a native
bird center
is next on the agenda. Mauna
Kea is a unique astronomical observation
site. The atmosphere above the mountain
is extremely dry -- which is important
in measuring infrared and submillimeter
radiation from celestial sources
-- and cloud-free, so that the proportion
of clear nights is among the highest
in the world. The exceptional stability
of the atmosphere above Mauna Kea
permits more detailed studies than
are possible elsewhere, while its
distance from city lights and a strong
island-wide lighting ordinance ensure
an extremely dark sky, allowing observation
of the faintest galaxies that lie
at the very edge of the observable
Universe.
Hawaii Humpback Whale National Marine
Sanctuary - Coordinator
Manta Pacific Research Foundation
Kona rainforest lecture and exploration.
The
third week will be spent,
once again, on the high seas. Equipped
with
new-found diving skills, marine biology
knowledge and production acumen,
students will dive, photograph and
create short productions. These video/
photography resources will
later be made available to teachers
and students via Youtube, the Imaging
Foundation resource center
and via other internet distribution
sites.
One
Week
Option:
Students
are able to join the IF team for a single
week. These students will join the
expedition team and be immediately
incorporated into the team. Based
upon their prior expereince and skill
set, the students will be assigned
duties that best fit their background
and interests. Students not SCUBA
certified will be able to complete
their certification course while
aboard the Kona Aggressor.
